History

At Holy Spirit we strive to prepare our children for a rapidly changing world through the understanding of key moments in history, Britain’s and the wider world’s chronology and the ability to ask questions about why things have happened in the past -  in order for them to be prepared for the future. History is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in students' lives as they develop a sense of identity through learning about the past, and begin to understand how the past has shaped the present, therefore understanding how this will impact on the future.

At Holy Spirit, we aim to create enthusiastic and inquisitive historians who can apply their knowledge and understanding of the past. Our teaching and learning in History will help pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It will inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask insightful questions, think critically and morally, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History also helps pupils to understand and respect the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity. They will become free-thinking individuals who understand the challenges of their time and be able formulate their own opinions.

We have made recent changes to the History curriculum, ensuring it meets the needs of the children and is in accordance with the new OFSTED framework. It has been completely re-written ensuring we develop and build our children’s historical knowledge, skills, and conceptual understanding, year on year. We aim to bring history alive and excite our young learners.
